Climb Mount Ausangate 13 days
Located southeast of Cusco, in the impressive Cordillera de Vilcanota, Mount Ausangate is one of those beautiful sacred mountains in South America that is getting more and more interest for climbers and trekkers.
For experienced climbers only!
Day 1: Cusco - Tinqui.
6-7 hours drive time to the little village of Tinqui. Camp at 3900m. (B, LB, D).
Day 2: Tinqui – Upis.
Trek to the valley of Upis where we will set our camp at 4600m. On the way on we will have an impressive view of the north face of Mount Ausangate. (B, LB, D).
Day 3: Upis – Pucacocha.
Trek to the Pucacocha Lake for the next camp. Today we walk through the first high pass, Arapa Pass at 4900m heading towards our next camp at 4700m from where we will have amazing views of the hanging glaciers of the west side of Ausangate. (B, LB, D).
Day 4: Pucacocha – Machurakay.
Today’s trek is along the next high pass, the Palomani Pass at 5100m. On the way we will have the views over the Ausangatecocha Lake and some of the beautiful peaks like Surimani and Kampa I. Finall arrive at Machurakay camp (4600m) witch also will be our base camp for the next days. (B, LB, D).
Day 5. Machurakay Rest Day.
Resting day. We might use the day to make a gentle hike to observe the impressive glaciers of Ausangate, or simply relax by the camp. (B, L, D).
Day 6: Machurakay – Camp I.
We will transport our climbing gear to camp I (5400m) on the south side of Mount Ausangate. (B, LB, D).
Day 7: Camp I – Camp II.
Climb to the upper glaciers of Mount Ausangate. Camp II at 6100m. (B, LB, D).
Day 8: Camp II – Summit – Camp I.
Climb to the Summit and return to Camp I. (B, LB, D).
Day 9: Camp I – Machurakay.
Trekking back to Base Camp. (B, LB, D).
Day 10. Machurakay – Ticllacocha.
Trek to Ticllacocha Lake at the base of Jatunjampa peak. Camp. (B, LB, D).
Day 11: Ticllacocha – Otorongococha.
Today we will cross the highest pass on the trek at 5200m, the Apacheta Pass, a mystic place in front of Pucapunta and Punta peaks. Next camp is by Otorongocha Lake at 4700m. (B, LB, D).
Day 12: Otorongococha – Pacchanta.
After visiting the small sacred lakes of Minaparayoc, we trek towards the little village of Pacchanta, where we find some hot water springs at 4400m. We set camp and prepare to taste the delicious Pachamanca, the traditional meal of the locals. In the evening we will have the opportunity to enjoy some local music and dance with the indigenous people from the area. (B, LB, D).
Day 13: Pacchanta – Tinqui – Cusco.
After a relaxing morning we trek back to Tinqui. Private transport back to Cusco. (B, LB).
